The aims of Euro MI are…
To raise awareness of the issues faced by work migrants among national and local authorities. To lobby both national and European government for legislative and legal changes to allow successful migration among member states of the new EU.
To encourage non-governmental, grassroots projects and organisations that facilitate the integration of work migrants into the indigenous nations in which they settle. These projects and organisations would have the common aim of alleviating the social exclusion, discrimination, poor work conditions and other harmful situations that work-migrants face.
History
In September 2006 Barka established a Polish British Mission for Employment in partnership with the Simon Community and Housing UNLEASH. The project was aimed at providing assistance to work migrants who fail to find employment, end up on the streets and are subject to quick degradation processes. Soon after launching the PBME project, we were contacted by various organizations and institutions from other Member States of the EU which face the same problems as the United Kingdom. October 2006 saw the creation of the European Migrantsâ Integration Network (EuroMI).
The basic principles of the network were included in an appeal to the European Commission in 1996 (download here). The Euro MI representatives contributed to the Closing Conference of the European Year of Workers Mobility which was organized in December 2006 by the European Commission in Lille, France.
